Kauai Day 6

After conquering the Pihea Trail at Waimea Canyon and getting a view of the Napali Coast, we decided we definitely wanted to do the Kalalau Trail where we could see both ways down the coast. We headed back to the north shore and had breakfast at Hanalei Wake Up Cafe. It was a beautiful rainy morning and we were sitting on the porch.  We could literally reach up and touch this sign from our table.  The view was beautiful.
Signs at the trail head...Hazardous Cliff!!  Flash Flood!! Falling Rocks!!  Remind me why we want to do this?

Oh yea, this is why!  Beautiful view of Ke'e Beach.

Wow!  Look at that water!
Danger! Emergency Helicopter Landing.  Oh sure, sign me up.
This hike was tough.  It was a four mile round trip trek.  But the scenery along the way definitely made you forget that you were getting a heck of a workout. This is a popular trail so it was fun to see people coming and going.
We made it to Hanakapi'ai Beach!  We couldn't even get in the water to cool off because there were warning signs everywhere about the dangerous rip currents (supposedly the deadliest beach in Kauai!). Yikes!
These strange little rock sculptures were all over the beach.
Brandon decided to contribute his own work of art before we hiked back.
Giving my best Shaka/Hang Loose sign!  Feeling good, we're almost done!
These are our poor shoes after days of trekking around Kauai.  Kauai has red dirt (kind of like SW OK) that is basically rusted volcanic rock and it does not come out! This picture doesn't do 'em justice. Mine had to be retired.
Back in Hanalei town we treated ourselves to some frozen delights.
Beautiful, cloudy Hanalei Bay.
Ahhhh.
When we got back to our hotel we saw people gathered on the beach and went to see what the fuss was about.  There was a Hawaiian Monk Seal on the rocks.  We learned they are endangered and native to Hawaii so it was interesting to get to see one.
That night we weren't that hungry after our late afternoon snacking and lunch so we hung around the hotel trying to figure out what we wanted to do.  We were so glad we did because they had a mini luau with the cutest little hula girls I've ever seen.
They did such a good job!  We ended up just having dinner there.  They made the best Kalua pork BBQ sandwiches.  I tried to replicate them when we got home, but they didn't quite measure up.  Maybe I need to dig a hole in my yard for the pig?  :)
