Kauai Day 3

Alternate title #1 The Day Brandon Discovered Java Kai.

Alternate title #2 The Day We Got Lost in the Hawaiian Wilderness.

Ahhh, Java Kai.  It is here we discovered the perfect cup of coffee.  I'm pretty sure my husband won't buy grocery store coffee any more (he has already ordered and received a shipment. Total coffee snob, he is). Wink Wink.  We visited Java Kai almost every morning of our vacation.  We were starting to feel like locals.  :)
Coconut muffin and perfect coffee, so good!
This is a view of the Wailua River, more on that in a moment...
Our sweet ride.  ;)  The Chrysler Convertible.
Opaeka'a Falls...
There are chickens EVERYWHERE!  Rumor is, in 1992, Hurricane Iniki destroyed all the chicken coops thus setting them free to roam the island.
After we saw the falls, we headed to the Kamokila Hawaiian Village (where part of Outbreak was filmed).  There we rented a kayak and headed toward the trail that led to the Secret Falls.  Let me just tell you, I was so nervous about being in a kayak in the river.  It wasn't the big canoe you see in the foreground, it was a kayak.  I totally wore my life jacket.  Brandon laughed at me.
Once we banked our kayaks we started on our hike.  We had to cross a shallow part of the river at one point.  This was so out of my box.
Notice I'm carrying a stick, you know in case I had to fight off wild Hawaiian pigs or something.  Because that stick would have really done the job.  Ha!
Previously on LOST...
It's true, my directionally savvy husband and I started off on the wrong trail.  The map (and directions) they gave us were terrible and the paths were not clearly marked so we took the wrong one (we wondered how long it had been since they'd actually hiked their own trail).  After doubting ourselves, turning around and getting back in the kayak, we went to see Fern Grotto.

Fern Grotto is a lava rock covered with Boston Sword Ferns.  Very interesting looking

We attempted the hike to Secret Falls again and were successful this time! Lovely!  Brandon braved the ice cold water and swam out to the waterfall.  I braved the water, but didn't swim out that far.

After our hike and kayak workout, we chowed down on some Bubba's burgers.

We still had one more waterfall to find.  This one had a roadside lookout!  No hiking required. The Wailua Falls were beautiful!  They were featured in the opening theme of Fantasy Island back in the day!
We relaxed at the hotel for a little bit then headed out for dinner.
Again with the self portraits... :)
